he is looking outside his car window, and mars is huge. it’s 2012. mars is the size of the moon in daylight — on those days when you can see the moon clearly and the sun at the same time. he can see certain planets (mars, namely) because all the planets are aligned. when he changes angles, he can see them all at once, poking out from behind the others.
